The hard work of a local volunteer was recently recognized as part of the Town of Hempstead's first annual Irish-American Heritage Celebration.
For more than 25 years, Donna Ryan, a resident of Levittown, has served as a volunteer with the local Kiwanis Club. Her work with the club has included helping out with the Terrific Kids program and co-chairing Community Pride Day.
The purpose of the celebration was to recognize the work of Irish-American residents of the area, particularly those who have worked to promote Irish culture and heritage while also having a positive effect on the community.

Ryan moved into her current home in Levittown with Pete, her husband, back in 1962. The couple have lived in the same house for more than five decades. In addition to her work with the Kiwanis Club, Ryan has volunteered with the Levittown United Cerebral Palsy Ladies Auxiliary, the Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the Levittown Community Council, where she is a charter member and president for three years. She has also donated her time to the 40th, 50th, and 60th Anniversary committees for Levittown.
Along with Ryan, the ceremony recognized the work and efforts of several more residents of the area, including John Murray Jr., who owns Mulcahy's Pub in Wantagh, Kathryn Driscoll Hopkins, from Garden City, and the Mayor-elect of Hempstead, Don Ryan.
