Over the course of 4 days and more than 225 miles, 26 police officers from the Nassau County Police Department will make their way from New York to Washington, DC.
The police officers from Levittown and the surrounding area will join departments from other jurisdictions, such as the Port Authority Police Department on the Police Unity Tour.
An annual event, the ride raises money to support families of police officers who were killed in the line of duty. By the time the group reaches DC, the hope is to have raised more than $2m.
The ride kicked off with a ceremony on Monday, May 9, at 9:00 am, held at the 911 Memorial. Standing in front of the Reflecting Pools, officers read the names of other police who lost their lives while serving in New York last year, as well as the names of officers who died in the 9/11 attacks.
After the ceremony, the participants hopped on their bikes and began to drive south. People who wish to support the police can stand along the roadside with Banners and Signs. The route stretched along the West Side Highway, to the Holland Tunnel, and then into New Jersey.
Nearly 1,800 other police riders are expected to join the team from New York on the way to DC. The riders are expected to get to the capital by 3:00 pm on Thursday, May 12.
