Levittown honors businessman during German American Celebration

During the first annual German American Celebration at the end of the last month, the Town of Hempstead honored Steve Haller, who until recently was a business owner in Levittown.

It was not just Haller's business savvy that earned him the recognition; the Town of Hempstead gave out the awards to residents of German American descent who have done something to make a difference in their communities.

Haller has four decades of experience as a volunteer. He has been a member of the Levittown Kiwanis Club for 38 years and has been the president and lieutenant governor for the club's Long Island Central Division. During his time with Kiwanis, he has helped to raise more than $200,000, much of which went towards building a home for the club in Utica.

Townships can use Stationery printers to create award certificates for the people they are honoring. In addition to Haller's work with the Kiwanis club, he also worked with high school students, serving as an advisor to the Key Club, which focuses on community service.

The award during the German American Celebration is not the first time Haller's hard work has been recognized. He has been named Man of the Year by the Levittown Chamber of Commerce and has been given the Volunteer of the Year Award from Newsday.

Several other German American Long Island residents were recognized by the Town of Hempstead. They include Walt Itgen of Itgen's Ice Cream Parlor, furniture builders Alex and Gerhard Schmitt, and Geraldine Brand, who volunteers with the Steuben Day Parade.
