Levittown debuts Do Not Knock program

An unexpected knock at the door can disrupt the peace and quiet of a home, but now the town of Hempstead has come up with a solution to the problem.

Residents are being offered "Do Not Knock" stickers, which they can place on their front doors to keep solicitors from disturbing them.

The program was put together by the Town Board, led by Kate Murray, the Town Supervisor. The board used brochure printers to produce a pamphlet that it will send out to residents. The brochure gives a rundown of the program and explains the sticker and decal options available.

Locals can order ‘Do Not Knock’ stickers for free. The vinyl stickers measure 3” x 7” and can be placed on the door or on a front window.

In Levittown, the Tardibuono household was the first to display a ‘Do Not Knock’ sticker. According to Margaret Tardibuono, the number of front door solicitors has gone up in recent years, but she is hopeful that the sticker will deter them in the future.

Supervisor Murray is also proposing more legislation to further discourage soliciting. The current penalty for people who ignore a ‘No Soliciting’ sign is $250. Under the proposed legislation, the penalty would jump to $500, with a fine of $1,000 for repeat offenses.
