Ventriloquist on way to Buffalo

A comedian who is often credited with reviving the art of ventriloquism is coming to Buffalo.

Jeff Dunham is an actor, stand-up comedian, and ventriloquist from Dallas, Texas, who has appeared on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” and “Comedy Central Presents” among others. He has seven specials running on Comedy Central and two on Netflix. His “Spark of Insanity” tour landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Most tickets sold for a stand-up comedy tour.”

He introduced the dummy Achmed the Dead Terrorist, an animated skeleton, in 2007 and the character became a sensation. Dunham’s interest in ventriloquism goes back to his childhood, when he received a Mortimer Snerd dummy from his parents. By the time he was in fourth grade, he knew he wanted to be the best ventriloquist ever.

He practiced, watched himself in a mirror, and studied the techniques of the legendary Edgar Bergen, who, with his dummies Charlies McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, were cast members on “The Chase and Sanborn Hour” from 1937 until 1956.

Dunham’s style has been called a less disagreeable version of Don Rickles. His characters are bad tempered, insulting, and politically incorrect, but hysterically funny. A review says:

“Funny as always. Jeff never lets us down. . . . I definitely recommend seeing him if he’s ever in your area.”

Jeff Dunham will be at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo on February 14. Events like this can benefit when organizers advertise them with Posters from Print shops.
