Willi Carlisle grew up in Illinois and Kansas, but ostensibly decided to go to the University of Arkansas for an MBA in poetry writing. His real goal, however, was to meet and learn from the many banjo players in the area. He had been involved with music all his life, and played in a punk band while he was a college undergraduate. In Arkansas, he became part of the local music scene, going to jams and square dances.
Carlisle now has three albums out and another on the way, exploring the connections people make and how they support one another. Critics are probably most enthusiastic about his 2022 release, “Peculiar, Missouri,” which comprises twelve tracks, including “Life on the Fence” and “Vanlife.” The latter is a raucously cheerful song about a trucker that disguises the fact the driver is essentially homeless. Carlisle also tackles social issues in songs like “Este Mundo,” which is about water rights. A review of a Carlisle live show says:
“Willi Carlisle was an absolute entertainer from beginning to end. This was a show for the history Books, I will remember this one for as long as I live.”
Willi Carlisle will be in Buffalo on Saturday, July 22 at The 9th Ward. Organizers of concerts like this can take advantage of poster printing to create colorful advertising for the event which attracts attendance from locals.
