Historical society plans Christmas market

The Catonsville Historical Society is planning to inaugurate a new Christmas tradition.

The society usually holds an open house during the holidays. This year, it has decided to try and replicate a traditional German Christmas market.

Outdoor markets are held annually in cities such as Stuttgart, Munich, and Dresden. The Catonsville market will follow the same tradition, and feature such staples as mulled wine, stollen, German apple cake, and gingerbread. In addition to these European-style foods, vendors will be selling their wares.

However, the society isn't going completely European; it is also including events that have come to mean a lot to Catonsville residents. These include a visit from Santa Claus, a concert by the Salem Brass, and the Christmas Train Garden. The train garden is a phenomenon that seems to be unique to Maryland, and refers to small indoor display, almost always including a toy train, that is put up during the holidays.

The Christmas Market will be open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Saturday, December 5, Santa will be at the market from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and the band will entertain visitors from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The train will operate during the entire day, and attendees can tour the Townsend House, which will be decorated for the holidays.

Event organizers could work with a poster printing company to create colorful Posters to advertise the market.
