Construction doubles size of Catonsville YMCA

Construction was recently completed at the Catonsville Family Center YMCA, doubling the size of the 45-year-old facility to 30,000 square feet.

Construction started in 2011, and was finished in three phases. Among the improvements made possible by the enlargement is new equipment, which has been arranged so that people have more room to work out. Additional locker rooms were built for children to use, and a new family room and enlarged stay-and-play area were also added. The family room features seating, blocks, and a foosball table.

The most obvious differences are near the main door, where a new entrance boasts a rock climbing wall, a bar serving smoothies, and areas where members can relax and socialize. One group of seats overlooks the pool, while another invites people to sit around a fireplace.

Dawn Chrystal-Wolfe, who is the Y's executive director in Central Maryland, said the goal of the renovation was to transform the facility from a place people go occasionally, to a vital “third place”- the place people want to go to after home and work. She hopes the Y will become a family “hangout”.

Flyer printing companies have had great success in creating mailers for residents, informing them of projects that improve facilities in their area. The Flyers can describe the changes, and list hours, parking options, and operating hours.
