Catonsville's gets a pizza the action

A Catonsville restaurant will be opening a new location in Baltimore, at the Marriott Inner Harbor.

BricknFire Pizza Co., which is based in Catonsville, won a ‘Shark Tank’-type competition for unusual restaurant concepts. The contest was held by the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor, located at Camden Yards.

The competition, known as Canvas, is Marriott's lab for exploring food and drink concepts. The hotel invited bartenders, chefs, artisans, and entrepreneurs from the mid-Atlantic area to enter their concepts for dream restaurants. On June 22, BricknFire was named the winner.

BricknFire, which was set up last year by Trey Kirby and Megan Lanasa, uses a coal-fired pizza oven to make its pies. The oven is mobile, and Kirby and Lanasa travel to special events and farmers' markets in the area. BricknFire also operates at The Breadery, which Lanasa's parents own.

A group of hotel owners, foodies, industry professionals, and local restauranteurs gave the nod to BricknFire. The hotel will work alongside Kirby and Lanasa to build and equip the space, which could cost as much as $50,000. If the idea is successful in its first six months, the hotel will negotiate a lease.

Kirby and Lanasa might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a handout to distribute near the location at the opening. If they include a coupon, they could create excitement and increase business.
