Lichens are a combination of a fungi and algae living in a symbiotic relationship, and a Catonsville area class will introduce them to the public.
The learners who take a seat for the Lichens 101 class will walk away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of these partnerships that, even though they grow all over the world, often go unnoticed. It will include both an indoor lecture and outdoor walk, and attendees are welcome to bring along a lichen sample for identification if they wish.
During the discussion, the learners will find out about the life cycle of lichens, including how and where they grow. After this, the group will head outdoors for a walk to try and find some in the field. They will be taught how to properly collect, label, and store specimens for future study, and it will then be time to return to the classroom to examine the specimens under a microscope, hopefully identifying them using the tools provided.
Even after they have put their academic days behind them, many people still appreciate the opportunity to learn. Handouts and even bound texts can be prepared for a class or other educational activity by Print shops.
This chance to get the lowdown on lichens will be offered on Sunday, February 25 at 6908 Belair Road in Baltimore. It runs from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
