A new tool that lifeguards can use to keep swimmers safe is being tested in Pompano Beach.
The Pompano Beach Fire Rescue Service is currently testing the feasibility of using drones to help those in distress. They could be used in a variety of ways, including quickly spotting those who are in trouble out in the water and even dropping of life preservers so they can stay afloat until rescuers arrive.
Area fire rescue chief John Jurgle, who witnessed one of the demonstrations of this new equipment, noted that he was impressed with their ability and that he can see their potential in saving lives. These can be distributed to the public and any other stakeholders who may wish to know more about the results of the testing.
The plan is to pair them with the current complement of lifeguards that monitors the beach and offshore waters.
Another way that they can be put to good use is in helping to find a child on the beach who has become separated from his or her parents. Since they have an aerial view, they can quickly search a wider area than someone on foot.
