Originally named Fulford, the suburban city that was soon to become North Miami Beach, Florida, experienced a name change in 1931. It was a good marketing move; as a suburb of Miami, the name change instantly gave the public an idea of where the city was located. Ironically, although North Miami Beach is still a suburb of Miami, it no longer has a beach within city limits. Changes to the Intracoastal Waterway moved the beach area outside the boundaries of the city. This is of little consequence to visitors and in no way deters from their enjoyment of their visit to North Miami Beach. Despite its status as a suburb, the city still receives its fair share of tourists. It is quieter here than in Miami, which some visitors appreciate.
