Miami ballet offers take on holiday classics

A ballet company based near North Miami Beach will be launching a new rendition of the holiday classic The Nutcracker.

The new production is by Miami City Ballet, a company based out of Miami Beach that tours Southern Florida. The production uses George Balanchine’s choreography of the classic story about a little girl’s dream of toy soldiers, the Sugarplum Fairy, and the Mouse King, set to music by Tchaikovsky. The Miami City Ballet production will involve more than one hundred dancers, with Lourdes Lopez serving as production supervisor. The production will bring some of Miami’s diverse culture to the classic Russian story, with Cuban American artists Ruben and Isabel Toledo providing costume and scene designs.

The music will be provided by a live classical orchestra. The Nutcracker is typically one of the biggest productions of a ballet company’s season, heavily promoted through tools like flyer printing and social media and the production could draw in people from nearby areas like North Miami Beach and Coral Gables. Miami City Ballet will also be appearing at the Doral Holiday Fest performing a medley of dances to help promote the holiday show.

Miami City Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker will run between December 10 and 30, with stops at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale, the Arsht Center in Miami, and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.
