Afro Roots to stream online

A music festival with a long history in the Miami area will broadcast a special concert featuring a variety of music in African traditions.

The Afro Roots Fest is a travelling festival that was born in Miami in 1999 and now has events throughout South Florida. After its flagship Miami Beach event was cancelled earlier this year, organizers came together to put on a show from the same venue this September. Although there will be no spectators, the show will be broadcast online. Virtual concerts, promoted through both Print tools like flyer printing and online advertising, have become a new medium with many high-profile artists experimenting with intimate settings and novel presentation.

Afro Roots Fest will be headlined by the Spam Allstars, a veteran funk and electronic group who is known for their weekly residency in Little Havana. Other performers include Sudanese pop singer Alsarah, Cuban-American reggae artist Johnny Dread, and Afro-Venezuelan electronic musician Venezonix. Some performances will be broadcast live, while others will be pre-recorded. The concert aims to tap into the African and Caribbean communities in nearby areas like North Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale, at the same time as the digital format will give the show a potentially worldwide reach.

Afro Roots Fest 2020 will take place on September 12 at the North Beach Bandshell, and will be streaming online.
