The Ocean Institute in Dana Point will host the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival this weekend, starting this afternoon, September 7, at 3:30 pm.
This festival celebrates the history of tall ships with actual recreations encampments of scrimshaw artists, blacksmiths, and the Port Royal Privateers, a “gentleman pirate” who could legally hunt down enemy ships. Cannon battles will take place at sunset on Saturday and Sunday.
The event begins today with the sunset parade of nine tall ships firing their cannons as they make their way to Dana Point Harbor. Viewing will be available from various locations along the Dana Point Harbor, headlands, and Old Cove Native Plant Preserve.
At Cap’n Jack’s School for Scallywags, children can learn how to walk and talk like a pirate. Above deck tours on all nine ships will be available from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm tomorrow and Sunday.
Among the tall ships participating in the festival are the Brig Pilgrim and the Spirit of Dana Point, both of which are used as educational tools by the Ocean Institute for thousands of school children each year. The Californian, a recreation of an 1849 Campbell-class Revenue Marine Cutter, is California’s official tall ship ambassador and has sailed to Mexico, Canada, and Hawaii.
