The 2015-16 school year for Capistrano Unified began earlier than previous years, and objections from stakeholders have prompted a review of the matter.
School started this year on August 25, despite protests from some local parents preferring the traditional starting date of the day after Labor Day. The reasoning given by the school board for the earlier start date was to better align Capistrano’s sport schedule with those of other schools, as well as provide extra time for students to prepare for May’s Advanced Placement exams.
Concern for the negative effects the early start time could inflict on teachers and administrators has hatched a plan to revisit the matter at the upcoming September 9 board meeting.
The decision to start early was not made on a whim, with the Board of Trustees for Capistrano Unified voting back in'April to move the first day of school back one week this year, and an additional week next year. This prompted parents to begin a “Save Our Summer' campaign, and likely resulted in increased business for Dana Point Print companies with the need for Posters and Flyers to garner support.
Among the efforts made by parents are a petition circulating with about 3,500 signatures, and a boycott of the first week of school. Some parents contend that August has always been a popular time for family vacations.
