The Ocean Institute in Dana Point offers summer cruises that study marine life, science, history, and the outdoors. It is a community organization that has field trips, exhibits, and teaches classes in marine science.
The Whale and Marine Life Tour will be held on Saturdays and Sundays throughout August at 10 am to 12:30 pm. Tours from 1:30 to 4:00 pm will also be held on the Saturdays.
On the tours, participants search for whales, dolphins, and sea lions and collect a sample on the sea floor to examine in the lab. Qualified staff discuss the different types of marine life and history of the region.
The Killer Dana Tour will be held every Sunday in August from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. On this cruise, riders tour scenic Dana Point Harbor and learn its history. The tour passes several historical sites and surf spots on the harbor.
Adventure Sail Pirates, Patriots, and Privateers is a three-hour cruise on a schooner or tall ship called the Spirit of Dana Point. This tour will be given on August 17, 18, 24, and 25 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Participants can learn to raise a sail, steer the ship, help with the lines, or simply appreciate the scenic beauty.
