Following testing during the last week of January, a cable car or ‘funicular’ once again began making regular trips down to Strand beach’s north end.
During the last eight years, the public has enjoyed the option of taking the free funicular to Strand beach rather than descending the nearby staircase. In 2014, when it became obvious that the cliffside cable car was suffering adverse effects from the corrosive marine environment, the Dana Park City Council approved a $680,000 replacement.
The convenience offered by the hillside cable car increases the appeal of Strand beach. Moreover, it is something the city, as well as some restaurants or cafes and select retailers, may wish to ask their printing company to include in their advertisements to entice visitors.
Designed in Switzerland by the Swiss manufacturer Inauen-Schatti AG, the new beige cable car has an eight-rider capacity. The previous green one was donated to the city by Sanford Edward, a Strand at Headlands developer, in 2008. The city chose to use the same manufacturer as had supplied the original funicular so the infrastructure already in place could be used.
The winter operating schedule for the funicular is from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Following Memorial Day, the schedules changes to 6:00 am to 8:00 pm daily.
