The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) is once again hosting its annual tribute to Dale Velzy with a luau, classic surf contests, a diverse range of cars, and a Polynesian review.
For the 25th year, hundreds are expected to congregate on Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. The DLSA holds the event to celebrate the influence that Dale Velzy, who passed away in 2005, has had on the surfing industry.
The first order of business for the event is the surf contests. These include longboard, SUP (stand up paddle), and tandem competitions. Entry costs for the contests are $75 in advance for a single or $120 for tandem riders, with an event T-shirt and admission to the luau included. For beach signups, $10 is added to the fee.
The luau commences in the afternoon, and the cost to attend it alone is $30 for adults, $20 for children between the ages of 6 and 12, and there is no charge for children aged five and under. These fees include food and alcohol-free drinks, as well as a Polynesian review immediately following the luau. Music will be provided by The Soul Surfers after the awards ceremony and surfboard raffles.
