Plan underway to preserve historic Burbank signs

The history of Burbank as viewed through its iconic signage will be preserved if residents can convince City Council to work with local business owners to prevent their destruction.

A survey conducted by the Burbank Leader determined that almost 80 Signs, revered by local residents as iconic landmarks, are scattered across the city’s commercial district. Numerous residents have voiced their wishes to maintain this historic charm by taking steps to keep these remnants of Burbank’s history.

Garnering grassroots support for any ordinance usually requires the assistance of a printing company, with flyer printing providing an efficient option. Prior to City Council approving an ordinance to help protect the city’s historic signage, a public hearing would have to be conducted followed by a review by the planning board.

The signs were divided into two groups: ‘Tier 1’ and ‘Tier 2’. All the signs considered for preservation date back prior to 1969. The two groups are differentiated by whether they are intact and in their original state or have been altered.

Presently, old signs enjoy “grandfather” status that protects them from having to conform to modern building codes. However, they lose that protection once they are removed for repair. A proposed ordinance would enable property owners to restore or repair signs without fear of having to comply with the modern codes.
