The upcoming 2014 Burbank International Film Festival will be highlighting the city’s history as “the media capital of the world”, according to Jeff Rector, the event’s director.
Burbank is known as having been home to one of the world’s first studios, Warner Bros. This was followed by Nickelodeon, Walt Disney Studios and the Cartoon Network.
This is the sixth year for the local film festival, which distinguishes itself from other more well-known festivals such as Toronto and Sundance by creating a more fun atmosphere. The Burbank festival resembles Comic-Con, although long lines are not the norm at the Burbank event. Another difference is the organization of the film festival here.
Rector alluded to other film festivals as being a “mishmash” with little structure. At the Burbank festival, specific themes are assigned to certain days. With the assistance of poster printing services, individual advertisements for each themed day of an event such as this one could increase attendance.
This Thursday has been designated for comedy and Friday for drama. On Saturday, during the day, family films will dominate the agenda and a Saturday night sci-fi, horror, and fantasy theme will hold sway. Saturday night’s highlights include cosplayers, ‘Star Trek’ celebrities, and a screening of the sci-fi classic ‘Forbidden Planet’ with the original ‘Robbie the Robot’ from the film on hand.
The Burbank International Film Festival runs September 3-7.
