Burbank steps up water restrictions

Burbank city officials announced June 1 that additional water restrictions would be effective immediately.

A statewide mandated water restriction has been issued by Gov. Brown, which requires Burbank to reduce its usage by 28% by February 2016. That translates into a cutback of a billion gallons of water. Officials have dubbed the cutbacks the ‘Billion Gallon Challenge’.

The challenge involves preserving water for indoor usage such as cooking, washing, drinking, bathing, and flushing. Residents are now restricted to watering lawns only on Tuesday and Saturday. This restriction will continue through October and then be reduced to one day from November through next March. Additionally, a time limit of 15 minutes per home to take place prior to 9:00 am or past 6:00 pm has been enacted.

Exceptions to the 15-minute watering limit will be given to residents using drip irrigation systems or low-flow sprinkler heads, but they must still follow the watering on Tuesday and Saturday only rule. Outdoor evaporative cooling equipment is not allowed and residents are asked to cover wading cools, spas, and swimming pools.

To boost compliance, the city might consider contracting with a printing company to produce Flyers explaining the latest restrictions and the consequence of non-compliance.

Violations for a household mean a fine of $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second and subsequently $500 per offense. Burbank faces a $10,000 per day fine if the city’s goal is not met by the agreed deadline.
