An assortment of schools in Burbank have made the grade this year.
Over half of the eleven schools in Burbank Unified were selected by the state to receive its Gold Ribbon Award. This distinction is granted to educational institutions that have shown progress in helping their students to be well prepared for the jobs and higher education opportunities that will exist in the 21st century. It is part of the state of California’s efforts to institute news systems of accountability for its schools.
Those in Burbank that met the criteria include Joaquin Miller, George Washington, Walt Disney, Providencia, William McKinley, Robert Louis Stevenson and Ralph Waldo Emerson elementary schools. Matt Hill, who is the Burbank Superintendent, remarked that he is very proud of these different campuses for being able to provide an outstanding education.
Mr. Hill went on to say that the award recognizes the hard work that the teachers and other staff put in every day to give their pupils the best schooling they can. Across the state, there were 6,000 elementary schools that were eligible to make an application to be considered for the award, and 772 of them qualified to receive it. Those that did were able to show significant gains in student achievement after implementing the state standards for science, math and English.
