Burbank presentation to help protect native plants

Just as with animals, plants can fall victim to poachers, and preventing this will be the topic of an afternoon presentation offered near Burbank.

Kevin Alison, who is a local expert when it comes to native plant propagation, will discuss how the state is home to several species of succulents that are at risk and how they can be protected from overcollection. Everyone is asked to bring proof of vaccination and a mask, and RSVPs are required.

Dudleya is a genus of succulents that have been impacted by the recent interest in these plants. During the lecture, Alison will explain how modern plant propagation methods such as tissue culture and micropropagation are making it more economically feasible for the retail horticulture industry to utilize those raised in cultivation instead of ones harvested from the wild.

Along with the presentation, the attendees will be able to take advantage of a show and sale set up by Tree of Life Nursery. It will have several Dudleya species on offer both before and after the talk. Plant care sheets, tree ID tags, blank herbarium sheets, and other materials for horticulturalists may be ordered from local printing services companies.

This chance to learn about some of the latest advances in protecting rare plants will be held on March 3. It will start at 4:00 pm, and will take place in the UCLA La Kretz Garden Pavilion.
