Seven artists were recently hired to make the city of Burbank a little bit more beautiful
The painters were tasked with the project of painting murals on utility Boxes that are found throughout the city. This pilot programme was undertaken through the city’s Cultural Arts Commission, which wanted to see bright and innovate works for the public to enjoy.
One of the artists who was selected was local teacher Jennifer Turnbull. She was the only Burbank resident to have been chosen, and she remarked that she was really looking forward to her fellow community members being able to share her artistic vision.
The overall theme for the installation was ‘Just Imagine’, and the hope is that it will allow more people to have a chance to enjoy free art outside of a museum or gallery setting. In total, 29 people applied for the opportunity to add their creative touches to power and water utility boxes. Each submitted a full color depiction of what their final piece would look like, and a committee was struck to decide which ones would be used.
Local organizations sponsored the program, and their help included the purchase of gift cards for supplies and a stipend for each of the artists. A postcard printing company can use photos of the finished works of art to create items that can be sold to tourists and others who would like to enjoy them in their own homes.
The seven works are located throughout the city.
