On April 30, the Haggen grocery store on Verdugo Avenue and Hollywood Way opened for business, with many familiar sights and faces.
Like a quick-change artist, a local Albertson took about 40 hours to make its transformation into a Haggen grocery store. The Burbank store was one of 140 grocery stores that Haggen acquired throughout Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington this year. Albertsons and Safeway have, between them, given up more than 160 stores in order to gain federal approval for a merger.
Before this recent series of acquisitions, Haggen, a Bellingham, Washington-based company, was a presence only in the Pacific Northwest. Now, the company has grown into a regional chain of 164 stores from a humble 18 locations with 106 pharmacies, up from 16.
In addition to Print products such as provided by a Stationery printing service, Burbank’s new Haggen opened with mostly only cosmetic changes to differentiate it from its predecessor. These include new fixtures and signage throughout the store, as well as out front. Additionally, the staff, which except for five new hires remains the same, now sport new green polo shirts.
More substantial changes include offering more local and organic products, such as bagels supplied from Western Bagels in Los Angeles and fish sourced from Santa Monica Seafood. Moreover, the store’s deli and bakery will feature a greater supply of fresh items made on site.Get a Free Quote for Stationery Get a Free Quote for Print
