Brea area workshop to introduce natural textile dyes

In the days before synthetic dyes, textiles were colored using materials supplied by nature, and a Brea area activity will bring a selection of these practices into the modern age.

Orange Home Grown Education Farm will be giving the public an introduction to the art and science of natural dyes. Doug Kent will serve as the facilitator for the 90-minute session, and four different plants will be used.

The group will be working with onions, avocados, tree of heaven, and willow, and will walk away with a grounding in basic horticultural nomenclature, as well as a knowledge of safety practices to use when working with natural dyes. Participants will be walked through the process of coloring textiles, and everyone is advised to wear sunscreen and bring snacks, as well as some water. Tickets to join the class are $10 each from AllEvents.in, which will cover the cost of the materials used.

Many people enjoy learning new skills, and taking part in a workshop gives them an opportunity to do so in a social setting. Handouts for an activity can be prepared by Stationery printers, which will also be able to offer an assortment of cost-effective marketing materials.

This introduction to the traditional ways of working with natural dyes will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday, January 20.
