Later this month, the Tour de Fresh will take cyclists on a 275-mile trip from Carmel to Anaheim to drive home a point and raise money prior to the PMA Fresh Summit show being held here in Anaheim.
For four days, 40 riders will pedal between the two areas to raise awareness of the need to increase the availability of fresh produce in schools. The trip will also raise money for the Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools campaign.
Held in conjunction with the PMA Fresh Summit show, the big names in the produce industry are banding together to raise $120,000 to pay for 40 new salad bars for schools across the country. The cost per salad bar is less than $3,000. It is hoped that the publicity of the event will encourage other groups and school districts to make the investment in adding this option for students.
According to the Tour de Fresh website, anecdotal evidence and academic research indicates that children who are offered choices of fruits and vegetables via a salad bar increase their consumption of these items. Brochure printers can assist individual retailers and companies by not only helping them promote themselves but the industry as a whole, and thus increase demand.
The Tour de Fresh will leave Carmel on October 13 and ride into Anaheim on October 16. Donations can be made via the website in various amounts, starting at $5.
