Pennies axed at local market

Mission Market in Fullerton and Anaheim has started a new policy of not dispensing or accepting pennies for purchases.

This could be an opportunity to contact a local printing company to obtain Promotional Products, which could be used to market themselves as “trendsetters” in the area.

Although the change has been greeted with mixed reviews, the company put together not only its reasons for the move, but also a list of frequently asked questions for their patrons.

Mission Market noted that pennies actually cost more to make then they are worth, costing about two cents for every penny. For over 30 years, pennies have been banned on overseas military bases as well. Also, there have even been studies that the handling of pennies for transactions wastes about two seconds per transaction.

Mission Market handles the elimination of pennies by rounding up or down to the nearest nickel. This means sometimes shoppers will pay a few pennies more and other times a little less. The store does not expect to profit on this new policy, as it figures that the rounding up or down will balance itself out.

For those patrons who want their exact change back however, the store will honor this, but owner Roland Foss states that judging by the number of pennies he finds on the ground, gardens, and bushes around his stores, he believes this will be a rarity.
