Downtown Disney renovation to start next month

Beginning in January, Disneyland’s adjacent Anaheim shopping mall will begin its new look as Downtown Disney commences a major makeover expected to last several years.

Among the changes taking place will be the demolition of the onetime AMC Theaters and the Earl of Sandwich shop along with some other stores including Starbucks West End coffee shop and Sugarboo. This will be to allow for a brand new addition to the Anaheim mall featuring a mid-century modern design.

Postcards and brochure printing will likely be updated as the renovations proceed.

The Downtown Disney renovation project will take place where a new fourth Disney hotel had been envisioned, since that project was axed in 2018. It is not anticipated that the currently planned renovations to the West End of Downtown Disney will require the same level of city approvals as the cancelled fourth hotel would have encountered. The newly planned renovations will be part a development agreement already in existence with the city of Anaheim.

So far, no mention has been made of the fate of the former Rainforest Café, former ESPN Zone or Star Wars Trading Post locations in Downtown Disney’s West End.

Dining, entertainment, and shopping in Downtown Disney is expected to become more diverse as a result of the planned renovations. Once it is finished the newly remodeled area will sport a mid-century modern architectural design, in Southern California style, integrating a multicultural aesthetic.
