Anaheim Union High School District board members have approached city council to see if the city could contribute to students within its borders.
Following a unanimous vote at the end of last month, school trustees presented a resolution to the Anaheim City Council asking the city to make an annual financial commitment to all the schools within the city limits. The request includes those institutions that are part of other school districts.
The resolution did not request a specific amount of money. It did, however, ask for Anaheim to use its influence to try and persuade its corporate partners to make an investment in local schools as well. All the contributed funds would be used for supplemental education programs, maintenance, and youth services.
Al Jabbar, a board member, said he viewed the matter as a covenant between the young people of Anaheim on the one hand, and the city and its corporate partners on the other. Early reaction from council members revealed a different interpretation.
Council Lucille Kring appeared surprised that the school district would even make such a request. She and Councilwoman Kris Murray said that corporate partners already contribute to the city’s youth by supporting libraries, parks, and other programs.
A direct appeal to the public or to various corporations in the area with the assistance of brochure printing services may help the district to make its point.
