Borrego Solar has finished installing solar panels on the city-owned Anaheim Convention Center, which will now be able to generate a portion of its power needs.
With 300,000 square feet of the Convention Center roof covered with 7,908 solar panels, the facility now has the capacity to generate almost 2.4 megawatts of electricity; enough to provide electricity for 600 homes or 15% of the center's electricity needs.
The $5.7m project will help Anaheim Public Utilities meet the state's mandate to derive a third of its electricity from renewable sources before a deadline of 2020.
According to city officials, Anaheim is doing well in its efforts to meet the deadline. The city is already getting 30% of its power from approved sources. Among these are geothermal plants, gas-to-power electrical generation from the Olinda Alpha Landfill, and wind turbines.
Brochure printers are used to inform the public about how their energy supplier is protecting the environment, as well as educate them on what they can do to help in this effort.
The solar panels are the latest in a list of environmentally conscious decisions the city has made with regard to the convention center. The venue already recycles 64% of its waste and is in the process of replacing the facility's fluorescent lights with the more cost-effective and energy-efficient LED bulbs.
