The Pickering Recreation Complex’s tennis courts recently had an upgrade to their lighting system that should result in significant savings of both energy and money for the city.
The facility, which formerly used 611,000-watt incandescent light bulbs, replaced them with 320 LED lighting fixtures. According to the city’s chief administrative officer, this is part of a plan to improve the overall energy efficiency of its infrastructure and buildings, with a goal of making it more economically and environmentally sustainable over the long term.
The new bulbs will use much less electricity than the old ones, while still providing excellent illumination. They also have a much longer lifespan, so they will not need to be replaced as often.
The head tennis coach at the recreation complex remarked that the courts are now much brighter than they were before, and there is no glare. There will also be less noise.
This is just one part Pickering’s plan to become more environmentally sustainable. Brochure printers can produce materials that provide more information to the residents about what they can do to help.
It is hoped that the lighting change will provide improved playing conditions for those who use the facility. The SaveOnEnergy program provided grants that partially paid for the retrofit, with guidance from the city’s Corporate Energy Management Plan.
