Level crossing axed to improve traffic flow on Springvale Road
Years of traffic congestion at the Springvale Road level crossing is set to be reduced with the Victorian Government’s $159m project currently in progress for its removal.
Due to be completed by the end of 2014 the project, which began in 2013, effectively addresses the situation of motorists on the busy arterial road interrupting the flow of traffic by queuing at the crossing each time the boom gates are lowered.
The three-lane wide Springvale Road carries more than 39,000 vehicles each day, while the railway line hosts 21 trains an hour at peak times. This means the boom gates can be down for up to 10 minutes at a time, causing major congestion.
A government report identified a number of related issues stemming from the congestion, including safety concerns, inability to increase train services for fear of adding to the problem, bus service disruptions, restrictions to pedestrian access while boom gates are closed and other traffic concerns.
Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said the new rail cutting work under Springvale Road would allow traffic to flow smoothly and cut travelling time for motorists.
The removal of the level crossing is a joint project being undertaken by Balfour Beatty Rail, McConnell Dowell, Brinckerhoff and Beca, together with Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM), VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria (PTV).
Flyer printing for events such as the government’s community team information sessions, which inform residents and commuters of the project’s progress, is a common practice.
