Captive audience locks in long run for Wentworth

Australian television drama Wentworth is to continue after the show was recently commissioned to run for another 30 episodes.

Shot in the Victorian suburb of Clayton, near Springvale, the award-winning series has become the longest-running 60-minute drama series in Australia. The latest announcement by Foxtel Executive Director of Television, Brian Walsh will see Wentworth continue until 2021.

The subject of poster printing and major media coverage over the years, the drama is in post-production of its seventh season which is scheduled to air in 2019. Supported by Film Victoria, production will commence on season eight next year.

A reflection of the old Prisoner series days, just re-imagined, Wentworth hit television screens in 2013 and immediately became a global sensation. A total of 140 territories around the world screened the show including Macedonia, Israel, Finland, Canada, France and the United Kingdom.

Walsh said the latest episode extension will see the series reach a tally of 100 episodes adding:

“The renewal of this much loved drama is testament to Foxtel’s unwavering commitment to Australian story-telling. Wentworth has captivated audiences in Australia and all over the world with its gritty nail-biting storylines, remarkable performances by an extensive ensemble cast and high production values.”

Wentworth has attracted many accolades and for Series 5 won both ‘Most Popular Drama’ and ‘Most Outstanding Drama’ Logies, being the first Australian drama to do so. In total the production’s awards have included four each of the ASTRA and AACTA awards and six Logie Awards.
