$3.3m grant to fast track new gymnasium

The start of work on the redevelopment of a major Aquatic Centre in Noble Park, near Springvale is a step closer following a Victorian Government grant of $3.3 million.

The City of Dandenong recently announced that the grant, provided under the Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Programme, will enable Stage One of the Noble Park Aquatic Centre redevelopment project to commence. The first stage targets the wellbeing and health of patrons, with the development of a new gymnasium. Plans for the gym highlight an extension two storeys high to include a spacious gymnasium, changing rooms, three group/programme fitness rooms, storage and administration areas as well as provision for access 24 hours a day.

According to a City of Dandenong spokesperson, the establishment of a new gym at the centre was part of its Aquatic Strategy adopted in September last year following extensive consultation with community members.

The latest grant was provided with a requirement that the project be finalised within a strict timeframe. Flyer printing campaigns are often undertaken following the establishment of community facilities such as this to keep locals informed of new activities and services on offer. In addition to the Aquatic Centre's redevelopment, Dandenong Council has also invested time and money into plans to replace Dandenong Oasis with a new wellbeing and aquatic centre.

The project is currently the focus of a business case being prepared by Council and funding has been allocated to begin the process of a detailed design early next year.
