Braeside residents are some of the people within the City of Kingston who are being encouraged to recycle their food waste as the council continues to introduce its new green bin initiative to the community.
About 50% of waste that goes to landfill in the Kingston area comes from food. This new initiative hopes to reduce this by encouraging residents to include their food scraps with their garden waste. Once collected, this waste will be used to create a nutrient rich compost. Recycling food waste enables residents to positively contribute towards helping the environment and bettering their community.
The waste is converted to compost in Dandenong South at a commercial facility where it is distributed for use on gardens, parks and farms. This recycling scheme is currently only for household waste and does not extend to commercial food waste.
The council will provide residents with compostable bin liners displaying a seedling logo to prevent residents placing their waste into non-biodegradable plastic Bags.
Reducing waste is becoming more important in order to protect the planet. As a result, councils and organisations are using poster printing campaigns to enlighten the public about sustainable living practices.
