Your Guide To Understanding Screen Printing

Screen printing creates a printed design using a stencilled mesh screen and ink. It is used in many industries for various purposes. Even though few people know how screen printing works, nearly everyone has probably used or owned a product with a brand printed on it.

How Does Screen Printing Work?

Screen printing works by stencilling a design onto a flat surface. This is done using a mesh screen, ink and a squeegee. These designs can be made with many different techniques combined with multiple colours. Here are the steps involved in screen printing:

  1. Creating the Design. The design is printed on transparent acetate films.

  1. Preparing the Screen. The second step is to select the screen's mesh count (the total amount of fibres/inch). Different designs may need different mesh counts. A higher number of meshes can produce finer details while maintaining ink. The mesh is then coated with an emulsion that is light-reactive. There are many types of emulsions that can produce different results.

  1. Exchanging the Emulsion. Once the design has been printed on the acetate sheet, the entire thing must be exposed to bright lighting. The light hardens any emulsion on the screen so that it remains liquid. You will need a separate screen to apply multiple layers of colour to your final design. Multi-coloured products are only possible with a printer that can precisely design and align every stencil.

  1. Wash off the Emulsion. After exposing it for a time, the screen will harden. The screen will then be cleaned of any unburned oil. After drying, the screen can be cleaned, and the printer will do any necessary touch-ups. The stencil is now ready to use.

  1. Preparing the item and printing. Place the material to Print flat on the printer board. Next, place your screen with the design appropriately on the material. After placing the material flat on the board, place the screen with the design on top. Then add the desired colour ink to cover the screen. Use a squeegee or a sponge to distribute the ink across the screen evenly. Press it through the stencil to transfer it to your material and print the design. The stencil can then easily be washed and reused.

  1. Drying, Checking, and Finishing the Product The product is dried in the dryer after printing. This is done to "cure" ink. It gives the product a smooth, colourfast finish. The final product must be thoroughly cleaned before being handed over to the new owners.

What Can Screen Printing Be Used For?

Screen printing can apply to any material of any size or thickness. This means it can be used in many applications such as:

  1. You can also find Posters, canvasses, and artwork.
  2. Clothing designs.
  3. Decals and stickers
  4. Signage.
  5. Sports products with a brand name
  6. Promotional merchandise
  7. Textile fabric designs.
  8. Balloons and decorations
  9. Packaging and labels for products.
