According to a survey by the Bureau for Economic Research (BER), the Consumer Confidence Index has risen by a couple of percentage points during the first quarter of 2021. The sharp decline in new Covid-19 infections and the lifting of the most recent lockdown has been cited as one of the reasons for the rise in consumer confidence. This bodes well for the retail sector that suffered tremendously in 2020.

These include distancing markers and regulating the number of people in the store, the use of sanitising wipes for cleaning of trolley handles, screens between till staff and the public, and greater use of contactless payment cards. The recent announcement by President Ramaphosa that the country will remain on Level 1 with only a few slight adjustments through the Easter holidays will please restaurant operators. Onsite alcohol sales, though only allowed until 11 pm, will continue. This is much needed for a sector that has seen many businesses close shop as a result of the extended lockdowns since March 2020.
The president was however quick to urge caution and vigilance, noting that business operators must double down on Covid safety precautions as any relaxation will see infections rising again.
