Although a picture can paint a thousand words, the value of a great font is often overlooked by those involved in the creation process.
Font selection has become an afterthought in today’s graphic design process and it seems that people have forgotten how much a font can actually say about the image you are trying to portray. The right font can change the mood of an entire piece and send a very different message.
How font influences graphic design
Here are three reasons why font selection is important:
- Easy to read: People are going to be easily switched off if your text is over the top and difficult to read. When you are trying to sell something or deliver information - simple is best. Save fancy fonts for interesting, bold and eye-catching headlines.
- Mood: Fonts - just like colours and images - set a mood for the viewer. A font conveys an image to the outside. For example, a light, playful font full of flourishes used on a children’s clothing website will convey a very different mood and message to the bold, clean, serious font used on the website of a law firm. Choosing a good font to go with your graphic design is critical.
- Font metrics: If the font metrics (the way the font flows, the height, the spacing etc) are poor, your work could look like that of an amateur and throw off the entire project.
Graphic design work of a high quality - whether it is a business card or a banner - is work that makes use of a wide variety of elements and techniques and does so in an artistic, tactful and unique way.
