How to address wedding invitations

Wedding etiquette can be quite confusing and we will be discussing the correct way of addressing wedding Invitations in this article. There are a few guidelines that generally govern the way a wedding invitation is addresses.

One tip that will definitely do you well to remember is the following: if you are at all unsure about anything when addressing wedding Invitations, you should always opt for a more professional approach (as opposed to a casual approach).

Addressing Invitations to different types of guests

  • Wedding Invitations addressed to couples with children: You may address wedding Invitations to “Mr and Mrs Smith and Family” or “Jack & Jane Smith & Family”. If the couple does not have the same surnames then you would address them as “Jane Doe & Jack Smith and Family” or “Mrs Jane Doe & Mr Jack Smith and Family”. You may then follow with the address. Always write out the words “Street, Road and Avenue. It is not proper etiquette to write the abbreviations of these words, i.e. Str., Rd. and Ave.

  • Wedding Invitations addressed to couples that do not have any children: If the couple that is being invited do not have any children and they have the same surname then you would address the wedding invitation to “Mr and Mrs Smith” or Jack and Jane Smith”. If the couple has different surnames then you would address it to “Jane Doe & Jack Smith” or Mrs Jane Doe & Mr Jack Smith”. Again, you can then follow with the street address.

  • Wedding Invitations addressed to single guests: If your guest has no children then you may address the wedding invitation to “Jane Doe” or Miss/Ms Jane Doe”. If the guest has children then you would address the invitation to “Jane Doe and Family” or “Miss/Ms Jane Doe & Family”. You would then write the family’s street address following this. A few useful things to remember would that a widow would be addressed as “Mrs John Doe” and a divorcee would be addressed as “Mrs Jane Doe”.
