Helpful tips on preparing your documents for printing

Many business owners will enlist the services of a printing company for professional printing, whether it is documents, files, Business Cards or other related items. However, your printed documents will only be as good as the design given to the printing company. In order to save you from going back and forth and to guarantee the fastest turnaround time, here are some tips on preparing your documents for printing.

Make sure you’re clear on the following specifications:

  • CMYK vs RGB: Colours that are created in RGB mode are not achievable when using standard four-colour process printing. The best way for you to ensure that the design you created is printed correctly is to change it to CMYK colour before you send it to the printing company. This will also give you a better idea of how the colours are going to look when printed.

  • Front and back printing: Make sure of the four over four setting, especially when printing Flyers. 4/4 is simply a way to say four colours on the front and four colours on the back. When you only Print on the front of a document you will use the 4/0 setting. This gets trickier when you Print a postcard that uses a 4/1 setting: four colours on the front and 1 spot colour on the back. Business Cards might be printed in 2/2: meaning you use two colours on the front and back.

  • Printing in black: If you decide to use black ink for your documents, be advised that there are two different types of black you can use. Black 100 K should be used for body copy and barcodes, while Rich Black should be used when printing blocks of black. Rich black specifications may differ from one printer to the next. Your printer is likely to have a wealth of experience and knowledge, so be sure to ask them for their input and advice.
