What's Happening in Silverlakes-Pretoria East, Gauteng…

The 2021 school year will finally start on February 1 with private schools opening first and public schools following two weeks later. This also coincides with the relaxation of the latest national lockdown, which has been downgraded to level 3.

As scholars head back to school, authorities must continue to studiously enforce health and safety measures that have served us so well during this pandemic. A flare-up in infections could force the government to close schools again, which we can scarcely afford given all the learning time we lost last year.

School reopenings need to be consistent with the country’s overall COVID-19 health response to protect students, staff, teachers, as well as their families.

These are some of the measures that schools must continue to enforce:

• Staggering the start and close of the school day
• Staggering mealtimes
• Moving classes to temporary spaces or outdoors
• Holding school in shifts, to reduce class size

Social distancing is key to preventing infections in schools

Hygiene, mask-wearing, and social distancing are by far the most effective ways to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in schools. Frequently touched objects and surfaces should be cleaned hourly with diluted bleach disinfectant when in use and classrooms must be properly ventilated and cleaned at least twice a day with a disinfectant. Importantly, students must avoid sharing Stationery as that exposes them to infection.

As schools revert back to traditional in-person lessons, there is a need to ensure adequate supplies of quality stationery and printed materials that teachers need for their day-to-day work as well as educational tools and resources for their students. This includes workbooks and curriculum guides, teacher lesson Plans, report cards, and school Calendars.
