From the 1990’s a technology known as dye sublimation was perfected and this allowed a very high resolution print yet at an incredibly fast rate. Images filled with colours could be printed on inexpensive machines as dye sublimation worked by transferring heat to the three special colour components coated with a series of unique chemicals which turns into gasses that bond directly into the surface of the paper. This is the easiest way of creating high-resolution prints yet one that is more costly than the laser printer (developed by Xerox).
Colour laser printers may be somewhat expensive, yet they produce a range of colours which is hard to match. Once these hit the market, the world of DTP was turned on its head and almost any printer with a laser imaging device became its own printing press overnight.
