Crafting Great Headings & Subheadings in Print Marketing

Headings are often an essential element of most Print marketing pieces; they are often the first thing people will see when they look at a piece of Print marketing. That is precisely why your headings must always be striking, informative and well-written.

What Is The Difference Between Headings and Subheadings?

Headings often depict the main point of a text, whereas subheadings will depict the subpoint that explains the main heading in more detail. Your headings and subheadings should all follow each other and build up to your conclusion.

Your main heading should, however, stand out from the rest, as it is a level above, carrying the key concepts. Your subheadings would thus be smaller, signifying supporting ideas. This distinction will visually differentiate your headings based on their importance. This makes it easier for the writer to organise their thoughts concisely and makes your content easier to scan for readers.

Things To Remember When Writing Headings

Certain things will make your headings succeed or fail. For example, a long-winded two-sentence paragraph for a heading will be challenging to read and most likely deter your reader. Here are some effective ways to make your headings:

  1. Keep it short and simple. 5-8 words should be adequate for your main heading. Subheadings can be a bit longer as they elaborate on the main heading.
  2. Don’t give it all away in the heading. Use your heading to introduce your next bit of information, not to replace it. If you say too much in your headings, there is no point in reading the rest of your content.
  3. Don’t create too many subheadings. You don’t need a new heading when writing a new sentence or paragraph. Choose your heading placements wisely.
  4. Keep your audience in mind. What are you trying to say to your readers, and can they derive your message from your headings?
