Poster design has improved significantly since the original poster was created. One of the earliest Posters can be traced back to 1477 when a public hand-drawn notice was handed out. These earliest Posters contained text primarily. Illustrations and designs only became more popular as time passed.
Thanks to modern technology, however, our design options are much more varied than they were in the past. There are many design options for Posters that allows us to use almost any type of image, design or effect. However, this creates a problem. How do you make sure your poster stands out from the crowd with so many design options?
Here are some considerations when making your poster:
The Type of Poster.
There are many different types of Posters you could make. There are many design requirements for Posters depending on their intended use.
Here are some examples:
- Advertising Posters. Advertising was one of the first reasons that Posters were even used, often promoting a product or brand. Posters in this category are extremely popular and are often made in a specific way depending on the industry they are used for.
- Event Posters. You've probably seen at most one event poster. They are easy to see and use bright, festive colours with little text. These Posters should make an impact and inspire action.
- Movie Posters. Movie Posters have significantly impacted pop culture and are now as well-known as the movies they portray. Well-designed movie Posters are valuable memorabilia. It is easy to evoke nostalgia through movie Posters.
- Political Posters. Many influential political Posters from history have significantly impacted the world, especially the design community. Even if you don’t want to design political Posters, you can still use these as inspiration.
- Educational Posters. These Posters inform and inspire the reader about a specific topic. To make them memorable, they should have a distinctive design style.
The Size and Orientation of Your Poster.
Most Posters have a standard size and orientation. It is okay to use different sizes for certain types of Posters, but not all. Movie Posters are generally of a standard size and orientation. These Posters can be easily identified as movie Posters because they are often large and have distinct features.
Other poster types, however, may not be subject to the same rules, so changing their orientation and size can help them stand out. For example, you can create a large, landscape-orientated educational poster to make it stand out from the rest.
Your Personal Preferences.
You should also remember that this poster is your brand and your personality. Try not to follow the example of others in your industry. Instead, make your own version of the traditional format by playing with different sizes, colours and poster types.
