Prepping your documents for professional printing

When you are having documents printed by a professional printer, be sure you deliver the documents in the proper format. Doing this will save you time and allow the printer to complete your print job in accordance with your deadline. Double check that the following things are taken care of before sending your documents to the printers:

  1. All of your documents need to be in PDF format. This can be done very easily yourself (or have your layout designer convert it after putting it together).

  2. Make sure you use a bleed on your page for content that is printed right near the edges. This will ensure your content and graphics do not run off the edge of the page.

  3. Check that all of your images have been converted to CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow Black) and are not RGB (Red Green Blue). This is a colour setting that your designer can check and convert within programs like Adobe InDesign as well as Photoshop.

  4. Take care when using “rich black” if your documents are to be printed digitally, as this could cause a mottled effect on the printout. Rather set your black to 100% in the settings, which will be sufficient for printing.

  5. If you’re printing a brochure or a business card, clearly mark where you want it to be cropped.

  6. Embed your fonts or convert them to outlines so that there won’t be problems down the line with uncommon fonts that your printers might not have.

  7. Be sure the images you use are high-resolution. Images for print need to be at least 300dpi to ensure that they do not look pixelated in the final printed version.
