What Is Considered Good Poster Design?

Poster design has evolved significantly since the first poster was created in the early 19th century (although one of the earliest examples of Posters, a public hand-drawn notice, can be traced back to 1477.) The earliest Posters consisted mainly of text, with illustrations becoming a common add-on as time progressed.

Luckily, with the rise of modern technology, we are not as limited as our predecessors with design options. Modern technology has made design options for Posters almost endless. But this, in turn, creates a different problem: with so many options, what’s the best way to ensure that your poster has a good design that stands out from the crowd?

Here are some things to consider when creating your poster:

The Type of Poster

There are several types of Posters that you can make. Posters will have different design requirements, depending on their use.

Here are some examples of poster types:

  • Advertising Posters. These Posters usually focus on selling a product or a brand. Advertising is the primary reason Posters were made in the first place. This is why Posters in this category are very popular and are often made in a certain way.

  • Event Posters. You have probably seen at least one event sign, from block parties to concerts. They are easy to spot and use festive colours with less text and vibrancy. That is because these Posters need to make an impact t evoke action from the readers.

  • Movie Posters. Movie Posters have historically significantly impacted pop culture, often becoming just as iconic as the movies they represent. Well designed movie Posters have become valuable pieces of memorabilia. This nostalgia evoked through movie Posters is invaluable.

  • Political Posters. Several powerful political Posters throughout history have greatly impacted the world, especially in the design community. Their distinctive visual style was developed during World War I and became prevalent during World War II. Even if you don't want to create political Posters, these are great sources of inspiration for poster design.

  • Educational Posters. These Posters aim to inform the reader about specific topics, often raising awareness and inspiring change. This is precisely why they need to have a distinct design style: to make them memorable.

The Size and Orientation Of Your Poster

There are standard poster sizes and orientations for most Posters, and it is more acceptable to stray from these sizes for some poster types than others. For example, movie Posters usually have a standard size and orientation that makes them easy to discern as movie Posters; they are typically large and easy to spot. If you stray from these sizes and make them smaller, they may not have the intended impact on your target audience.

That being said, other poster types might not have such strict guidelines and changing the size and orientation can make them more noticeable and memorable. For instance, creating a larger, landscape-orientated educational poster can help it stand out from other Posters' crowd.

Your Personal Preferences

It’s also important to remember that this is your poster, and your personality should shine through. Instead of copying the format of other businesses in your industry, try putting your own twist on the classic format and playing around with sizes, colours, and poster types.
