Things to Know Before Laminating Print Materials

Lamination can make printed materials last longer by protecting them from moisture, water damage, and stains. Laminate papers will look brighter, cleaner, and more appealing. Here are some things that you should consider for your next lamination project.

The Thickness of The Lamination

There are many thickness options when it comes to lamination. The type and purpose of the document will affect which thickness you choose. For laminate materials that will last longer, choose a thicker laminate. If you plan on laminating something that will be folded or rolled, you can select a flexible laminate with a thinner profile.

TIP: Your document will be placed between two laminate sheets, so your final product will be twice as thick as the laminate you choose.

Gloss Finish or  Matte Finish

Depending on your desired look and feel, you can choose between a matte or shinier laminate finish.

  • Glossy finishing will give printed materials a glassy appearance, increasing their vibrancy and colours.
  • Matte Finish gives products a softening appearance that reduces glare. This makes printed materials much easier to read.

Sealed Edge or Flush Edge

Laminate pieces have two choices of edges. The quality of your final product can be significantly affected by the choice of edge.

  • Sealed edges are when the lamination extends beyond a printed marketing piece's edge. This is less likely to come apart.
  • Flushed edges do NOT extend beyond the edge; they stop where the paper stops and won’t provide a good seal like sealed edges.

Square Edges or Rounded Edges

The edges of your laminated piece can be either rounded or square. You can choose the shape and style of your edges based on your personal preferences, but there are several other reasons to consider.

  • The thickness of the laminate. Square edges can be dangerously razor-sharp if your laminate has too much thickness.
  • The user's ages. Round edges pose a lower safety risk and should be used for children regardless of thickness.
  • The final product's intended use. The product can be used in many ways. You can leave the edges square if the object is used less often, for example, as a sign.
