Do you want your printed materials to last longer? Lamination protects printed materials and projects against water damage, stains, moisture and heat. Laminate papers are more appealing, vibrant, and cleaner. Even though the process of laminating essential items seems simple, there are several things you need to know, here are the top things to keep in mind:
The Thickness of The Laminated Film
There are many thickness options available for lamination. The type of document that you are creating will dictate the thickness you choose. A thicker, rigid laminate will ensure that your laminated materials last longer. If you are planning to laminate something that will need to be folded, you may prefer a thinner and more flexible laminate.
TIP: Remember that your document will be placed between 2 laminate sheets. Your printed piece will be twice as thick as your chosen laminate sheet.
Gloss Finish or Matte Finish
Laminate can be either shinier or matte, depending on which finish you choose.
- A glossy finish gives printed materials a glassy appearance that enhances vibrancy and colours.
- Matte Finish adds softness to your product and reduces glare. This makes printed materials more easily readable.
Sealed Edge, Flush Edge
When it comes to laminated pieces, there are two options for edges. The choice of the right edge can significantly impact the final product's look and feel.
- Sealed edges occur when the laminate extends beyond the edge printed marketing pieces.
- Flushed edges are only extended to the edge of the paper. They are commonly used when fluids and contaminants are not an issue.
Square Edges and Rounded Edges
Although your personal preferences will determine the shape of your edges, there are other things you should think about:
- Your laminate's thickness. If your laminate thickness is too much, square edges can result in dangerously sharp corners.
- The age of the user. Round edges pose less risk and are recommended for children of all ages, regardless of lamination thickness.
- The final product's usage. The final product can be used for many purposes. It is okay to leave the edges square if you are not handling the printed piece frequently, e.g. as a sign.
